5 Signs Your Roof Has Storm Damage (and What to Do Next)

North Texas gets some of the most intense hail and wind in the country. After a big storm rolls through the DFW metroplex, your roof can take a beating — and the damage isn't always obvious from the ground.

Here are five signs to look for.

1. Granules in your gutters and downspouts

Asphalt shingles are coated in protective granules. After a hailstorm, you'll often find piles of them washed into gutters or at the base of downspouts. Losing granules exposes the shingle to the sun and shortens its life fast.

2. Dents or bruises on shingles

Hail leaves dark, soft spots — "bruises" — where it knocked granules loose. Run your hand gently over a shingle (from a safe spot) and you may feel the dimples. Metal vents, flashing, and your gutters often show obvious dents too.

3. Missing or lifted shingles

High winds can peel shingles up or tear them off completely. Even one missing shingle is an open door for water. Look for bare spots or shingles that look out of line.

4. Leaks, stains, or drips in the attic

A water stain on a ceiling or a damp attic rafter means water is already getting in. The longer it sits, the more it costs — wood rot and mold are far more expensive than a roof repair.

5. Damaged flashing, vents, or chimney seals

The metal around chimneys, vents, and valleys is where many leaks start. Storms loosen and crack these seals, and they're easy to overlook.

What to do next

If you spot any of these signs:

  1. Don't climb up there yourself. It's dangerous, and you can void parts of your claim.
  2. Get a professional inspection — it's free. We'll document everything for your insurance.
  3. Act within your claim window. Most policies have a time limit to file after a storm.

KNJ Roofing Brothers specializes in storm and insurance restoration across Fort Worth, Saginaw, and the wider DFW area. Request your free inspection and we'll tell you exactly what we find — honestly.
